How to choose a great username for games and RPGs
Online gaming is bigger than ever, giving you the opportunity to potentially interact with multitudes of other players – but what kind of first impression are you going to give? A lot of this is down to choosing the right kind of name, one that can sum up your personality or capture an aspect of your life without coming across as too weird or painfully unhip. Hopefully our generator will help, but here are some hints and tips to get you on the way to choosing a memorable and catchy username:
Beware the letters-to-numbers switch
Old-school 'Leetspeak' writing, where letters are changed to numbers, can be useful for making passwords harder to crack – but using them in your public name is a guaranteed way of making yourself the squarest, least with-it gamer around. Only go with a name like Art3m1s if you're absolutely in love with the idea, or if there's a name you want and switching to Leetspeak is the only way you can get it.
Stick to a genre?
If you're looking to create a tag for a specific game, you need to bear in mind what genre the game is. Are you playing a gruff first-person-shooter, a weird RPG, a Souls-like action game, or a funky puzzler? Either way, each game is going to need a different approach, and you should try and choose something that will fit with the world and the style of the game you're playing.
Avoid capitals
It might feel like an attention-grabbing idea, but going for an all-caps name is a guaranteed way to make everyone who's playing with you feel LIKE THEY'RE BEING SHOUTED AT.
Be funny
Sometimes the best way of making an impression is by making people laugh. You can go for something silly, something daft, a ludicrous pun – just try and steer clear of anything that's actually offensive.
Look for inspiration
You can try and draw the idea for your gamertag from your own life and interests. Do you have a memorable nickname? What if you used your initials and instead chose different, more exciting-sounding words? You could also try going for a favourite song, a character from a retro game you enjoy, or your favourite comic-book hero? Or, you could take one of your favourite hobbies and use that as the basis of your name!
Think about the future
If you might want to use the name elsewhere – say, if you decide you want to launch your own Twitch channel – then check to see if someone else already has the same (or similar) name. If it's something you might want to do in the future, it's worth making a quick user account with the site in question so you can reserve that username just in case.
Don't be afraid to add
You may find that your favoured name is already in use – but if so, just add some new words or characters to the name to make it distinct. If your ideal gamer name is 'SkyWarrior', then you could add some numbers and make it 'SkyWarrior3000', or add some special characters ('Sky_W@rrior), or even a whole new word ('SkyGoldWarrior'). It doesn't take much to push your tag into more distinctive territory.
We hope you found a good gamertag! We also have a username creator if you would like a slightly different theme that's just as cool!
